David Purley’s LEC CRP1 after a 179.8 G impact i David Purley’s LEC CRP1 after a 179.8 G impact in pre-qualifying at the 1977 British Grand Prix—the heaviest crash in Formula 1 history. After his throttle became stuck open on the approach to Becketts, Purley crashed at 178km/h, deaccelerating to 0km/h in just 66cm and compressing the front half of his car. Incredibly, despite multiple injuries including 29 leg fractures, a broken pelvis, and going into cardiac arrest 6 times, Purely survived, albeit with one leg permanently shorter than the other by several centimetres. The former paratrooper—best known for his heroics desperately trying to save Roger Williamson from his upturned burning wreck at Zandvoort in 1973–would die chasing adrenalin in another discipline, crashing while flying his Pitts Special aircraft in 1985. 📸 Various, Unattributed
