1939 Belgrade Grand Prix: The Silberpfeilen’s Last Dance

ByScott Russell October 17, 2021October 18, 2021

Belgrade. September 3, 1939. The sun is shining in Kalemegdan Park as the Yugoslav flag drops. Manfred von Brauchitsch leads the field away in his Mercedes W154. It’s like any other Grand Prix, except that just a few hundred miles away the Wehrmacht are marching towards Warsaw.

Fuji Speedway’s fearsome 30-degree banked Daiich Fuji Speedway’s fearsome 30-degree banked Daiichi corner — built as part of abandoned plans to build a NASCAR-style oval in the shadow of Mt Fuji.

After funding ran out, the circuit was completed as a road course layout with the single constructed banked section connected up with a mile-long straight and a series of fast flowing corners.

The banked section was fiercely dangerous, with a blind crest on the 200mph entry. Vic Elford recalled how drivers “dropped into” the banking—rather than “climbing” up to it like on more traditional ovals.

The dangerous banked corner was never used again after 1974, when Hiroshi Kazato and Seiichi Suzuki were killed in a horrifying, fiery accident.

Since 1996 Mercedes-Benz (and Aston Martin from 2021) have supplied Formula 1’s official safety cars.

Before that race organisers were responsible for the safety car, which was first deployed at the 1973 Canadian GP (Porsche 914) before being officially introduced in 1993.

Other cars used ranged from Lamborghini Countachs at Monaco in the 1980s to Fiat Tempra at the 1993 Brazilian GP, or this Prelude at Suzuka in ‘94.

Legendary photographer Don Morley took this shot of Kenny Roberts on his TZ750 Yamaha at the 1982 Daytona 200.

Roberts later recalled how Morley went up onto the banking to take the photo, leaving authorities less than impressed: "He snapped the photo and was instantly thrown off the corner and almost out of Daytona!"
