Around the Houses: 2022 Historic Leyburn Sprints

The country town of Leyburn was buzzing like it was 2019 during the running of the 25th edition of the Sprints.

After COVID wreaked havoc over the last two years (2020 was cancelled; 2021 impacted by border closures), a sizeable crowd was on hand to watch the 221 strong entry field put their machines through their paces around the 1km street course.

After missing last year’s event, Lismore-based Dean Amos took out his 7th Sprints victory in his Gould GR55B Judd – the car he nearly lost this year when flood waters inundated his workshop.

First held in 1996, the Sprints commemorate the Southern Downs town’s history as host of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix. Over 30,000 spectators saw John Crouch win the race held on a WWII airfield.
